Media collection

Why use it?

Use the Media collection to create galleries of media content such as images and short video or audio clips for display in Moodle. It is not well suited for document collections (PDF, DocX etc).

Uploaded content can be displayed in either a carousel or grid format as thumbnails.

Students can create galleries on their own or in groups.

If enabled, users may like or comment on content.

Step 1: Add a Media collection

Edit Mode on. Scroll to the section where you want your activity to be displayed, click Add an activity or resource and pick Media collection.

Step 2: Settings

Tip: Click on the question mark icon next to any setting to display extra help or click on Moodle Docs for this page link at the bottom of each page in Moodle for accessing context-specific documentation.

General

Type a Media collection name and a Description of the activity.\

Collection type

  • Instructor collection: only users enrolled in the course with a Teacher, Teacher (Editor) or Manager role can create galleries and add content to them. This will prevent students from uploading content.

  • Contributed collection: allows all users ( editors and students) to create their own galleries and add content.

  • Assignment collection: allows students to create their own galleries and upload content. This also enables students to use these galleries as assignment submissions.

To enable the use of media collection in an assignment choose Media collection type as the submission type in the assignment settings.

After uploading their content into the Media collection activity, students can then navigate to their Assignment activity to select and submit their created galleries.

Students must create their galleries and add content from the Media collection activity or they will not be able to submit.

Important: Please note that it's not possible to bulk download multiple galleries (student submissions) for grading offline or to send to external examiners.

  • Peer-reviewed assignment collection: students are able to view other users/groups galleries and like/comment on them if those features are enabled. Can be used as part of an assignment submission.
