Blocks
Why use them?
Blocks can be added to the side of a Moodle course to display additional information or include additional features and are displayed in a ‘drawer’ on the right hand side. Any course participant can expand or collapse blocks.
Step 1: Add a block
Go to the course page and switch on Edit Mode.
On the right side is the blocks drawer. Open it by clicking on the < arrow icon and Add a Block then select the desired block from the menu (see Blocks | List of available blocks below)
Step 2: Move a block
With Edit Mode on:
To move a block, click and hold the cross icon on the right top corner of the block to drag the block to a new position. The block will ‘snap' to potential positions.
Step 3: Remove a block
With Edit Mode on:
To remove a block, click the three dots on the right top corner of the block and from the menu click Delete [Name] block.

Administration | Provides access to course administration functions. | |
Attendance | Works in conjunction with the attendance activity. | |
Blog menu | Quick access and/or enter course blog entries. | |
Blog tags | Displays a list of course blogs. Larger font-size indicates the most frequently used blogs. | |
Calendar | Displays course and site events (e.g assignment deadlines) in a calendar format. | |
Compile discussions | Lists all the forums and open forums in a course, in two drop-down menus. Selecting a forum from the menu will display all discussions in that forum, in a nested layout, on a single page. Useful for exporting or printing forum discussions. | |
Completion Progress | Displays course activities / resources that are complete / incomplete. | |
Course/site summary | Displays the course description. | |
Courses | Links to all courses the user is enrolled in. | |
Guides finder | Allows users to quick search for any Moodle or Lecture Recording guides available from the Eden Centre. |

Latest announcements | Displays recent announcement forum posts. | |
Latest badges | Displays badges earned by the user. | |
Learning plans | Quick access to learning plans. | |
Library search | Searches items from the library catalogue. |

Logged in user | Displays the profile of the user currently logged into Moodle. | |
Navigation | Provides navigation links to Moodle site and course pages. | |
Quickmail | Provides selective, bulk emailing within courses. | |
Recent activity | Displays participant updates since last access to the course. | |
RSS feeds | Enables RSS feeds from external websites within Moodle. Updates to show the latest information. | |
Search forums | Enables text-searches in a course forum. | |
Social activities | Enables additional activities to be added to a course using the social course format. | |
Text | Flexible block to add custom text, multimedia or HTML. Replaced the HTML block. | |
Upcoming events | Lists upcoming events from the Calendar. |
