Share your iPad with a Zoom meeting for extended online whiteboard capabilities
Why use it?
Your iPad can be used in place of a whiteboard or visualiser to enable you to hand-write maths & formulae, annotate documents, draw diagrams etc. It is possible to share any application on your iPad, which gives many more options than using the built-in Zoom whiteboard. Some ipad applications (eg Notability, iPad Notes application) let you save to PDF which you might want to share with your students afterwards.
There are three main methods for sharing your iPad screen to a Zoom meeting.
Join the meeting using your iPad and share your screen directly. You will need to make sure that you are using an external microphone, the noise of your stylus scribbling on the screen will otherwise be heard.
Download and install an iPad sharing plug-in on your PC or Mac.
Join the meeting simultaneously from an iPad and PC or Mac. This allows you to use the iPad for writing, but the PC/Mac for camera and microphone.
Method 1: Join a meeting directly from your iPad
This is the simplest method and will work at home or on campus. The disadvantage is that your iPad camera may present you to the meeting at an unflattering angle. The best thing to do would be to switch off your iPad camera when writing on your iPad screen.
Connect an external microphone, such as the headset that comes with an iPhone. On older iPads you can connect directly to the headphone jack, or the lightning connector depending on which type of headset you have. If you have a new iPad Pro you will need a USB-C adapter.
Start or join a Zoom meeting on your iPad.
Tap the green Share content button and choose Screen from the list.
Tap Start Broadcast.
Here's a step-by-step guide to sharing your iPad screen directly to a meeting.
Method 2: Join a meeting from your PC/Mac and share your screen via home Wi-Fi.
This method will not work on a large Wi-Fi network such as LSE Eduroam but only on a home Wi-Fi network. It's useful for making recordings or presenting classes when off-campus.
On your laptop, go to the Zoom download centre, download and install the "Zoom client plug-in for sharing iPhone/iPad".
Start or join a Zoom meeting from your PC/Mac.
Click the green Share screen button and choose iPhone/iPad from the list.
Follow the on-screen instructions to share your iPad screen using screen mirroring.
Here's a step-by-step Zoom guide to sharing your iPad screen via your PC/Mac.
Method 3: Join a meeting simultaneously from your iPad and PC/Mac to share your screen via LSE Eduroam Wi-Fi.
This method is useful if on-campus and you do not have an external microphone for your iPad and/or would like to use classroom or laptop cameras. It can also be used for hybrid teaching sessions. Method 2 is simpler but does not work when connected to LSE Eduroam Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, you will need two devices!
Start or join a meeting from your PC/Mac.
Mute your PC/Mac microphone and reduce the speaker volume (to avoid audio feedback when you connect via iPad)
Connect to the same meeting via the iPad app (there's no need to sign in to Zoom, just email yourself the meeting URL and click on it).
Mute your iPad microphone and reduce volume to zero or disconnect from meeting audio.
Unmute your desktop/laptop microphone and increase the speaker volume.
Using Zoom on your iPad, tap the green Share content button and choose Screen from the list.
Tap Start Broadcast and your iPad screen should now be visible via Zoom on your PC/Mac (and therefore also on other screens in the classroom).
