Enabling automated captions and transcripts in Zoom sessions

Enabling automated captions and transcripts in Zoom sessions

Zoom can generate automated captions and transcripts during any Zoom session, including Zoom Meetings and Zoom Webinars.

  • Please note that this feature uses Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology, or machine generated transcription. This means that the accuracy of these transcriptions is not guaranteed, especially where specialist, academic or technical terminology is used.

  • Automated captions generated within a Zoom meeting are not automatically saved. If you wish to retain the transcript please ensure that you save your own copy before the meeting ends.

  • Zoom can also generate transcripts for cloud recorded meetings. See our guide for publishing transcripts for recordings.

Meeting hosts: ensure automated captions are enabled

See the Zoom guide for how to ensure that automated captions are enabled. This should be enabled by default for LSE hosts.

Viewing the transcript/captions

Zoom provide detailed guidance on how to view transcript or meeting captions.

Here are the key steps:

  1. If the host has not disabled captions or live transcript, participants can click on the “Show captions” or "Transcript" buttons that can be found in the toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window. You may need to click on the "More" button to find these options.

  2. Participants can choose to display a full transcript to the right hand side of the meeting video window, or subtitles (captions) superimposed on the meeting video.

  3. Participants can also choose to save the transcript at any point during the meeting.

If the meeting is not being recorded and the transcript is not saved by a participant, the transcript will not be available after the meeting.

Change display settings for subtitles/captions

To change caption settings click on the "More" button at the bottom of the Zoom window and then click settings and then open the accessibility section.
