LSE Moodle academic year rollover

LSE Moodle academic year rollover

Each year, new copies are made of (almost) all Moodle courses ahead of the new academic year. These are exact copies of the most recent Moodle course for that module. They contain all the activities and files of the old course, but none of the enrolments or student data.

Moodle pages are also created for any new modules. By default, these will be blank pages; however, material or styles from another existing course can be copied over on request to eden.digital@lse.ac.uk

When these courses are ready for you to edit, you will see announcements on Moodle and in the ‘Staff News’ newsletter. You may also be informed directly by your department or programme manager.

New Course Pages

  • New course pages are created annually for each academic year. These are exact copies of the most recent version of the course, including all activities and files, but without student data or enrolments.

  • New modules are created with blank pages by default. However, content or styles from existing courses can be copied over upon request to eden.digital@lse.ac.uk.

  • Academic year identification: New course pages include the academic year in their title and category name (e.g., Accounting 2025/26: ‘AC100 - Elements of Accounting and Finance 2025/26’).

  • Students

Editing and Managing Courses

  • Teacher Editors can find their new courses in the ‘Future’ section of ‘My Courses’. When first created, courses will live in the ‘future’ section of both ‘My Courses’ and ‘Course Essentials’ on your dashboard. They will move to ‘In Progress’ when they reach their start date in September.

  • Department Category Managers can manage all courses in their department from the ‘Courses’ page. Managers who are not enrolled in courses will not see them in ‘My Courses’, but can find and manage all courses in their category from https://moodle.lse.ac.uk/course/index.php

  • Departments can request adjustments to creation and archiving dates. By default, new courses will be bulk created for all courses shortly after the summer exams, course will end in late August, and courses will enter read-only mode in early October. However, on request any of these dates can be changed for a department or a subsection of courses within a department.

  • Courses retain course content but not student data. Course copies for the new academic year duplicate the content of the most recent previous version of that course, but do not include enrolments, submissions, or other student data.

  • The ‘Do not refresh' tag is no longer needed. The new procedure of duplicating courses removes the previous need to reset existing pages, and thus the need for the ‘do not refresh’ or ‘late refresh’ tags.

  • Student course selections for the new academic year will appear in the new courses from September. Students can make course selections in LSE for You from late July. They will then be automatically enrolled in the new course pages in September.
