Publishing generative AI usage policies within Moodle
Who is this guide for?
From the start of the academic year 2024/25 the LSE prohibition on the use of generative AI by students will be removed. All academic departments must therefore agree their own policies on the use of generative AI by their students in assessment. A link to this policy must be published in a consistent and easily discoverable location within every Moodle course.
This document provides guidance for Moodle course editors on how to publish links to generative AI policies in their Moodle course(s).
Where in a Moodle course should a link to the course/department generative AI policy be added?
The link to your department or course policy on the use of generative AI by students should be included within a general information section at the top of your Moodle course(s). For consistency, we strongly recommend using the standard wording below.
Standard wording to be included in your course
Using Generative AI
When it comes to the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) during your time at LSE, you should familiarise yourself with the School's and your department's guidance and policies.
Read LSE's guidance on the use of Generative AI.
Familiarise yourself with the departmental guidance/policy on the use of Generative AI:
<Link to Department X - Departmental Generative AI Policy>
Within your Moodle course, this should look as illustrated in the screenshot below:
If you have an assessment section in your Moodle course, a link to your generative AI policy can also be located here.
How to add the generative AI policy text and link within your Moodle course
The simplest method is to import the text and link from another course, this is especially useful if you have a departmental generative AI policy.
Alternatively, if you have a course specific policy you can add the text to your course by adding a text and media area to the general information section of your Moodle course and then insert a File resource below that. See below for more details.
Reuse an existing departmental generative AI policy link from another Moodle course
If the recommended generative AI policy text and link has already been added to another Moodle course that you edit or manage, it’s possible to import this to your course.
Go to your Moodle course homepage.
Ensure that your course contains a general information section or similar at the top of your course page (section 1). If your course does not have such a section then add a new section and name it ‘General Information’.
Import the Using Generative AI text and corresponding File resource from your other course, following this guide on how to import resources from another course. If the text and file link are in section 1 in your other course, they will also appear in section 1 in your own course.
Alternatively, watch the short screencast video below to see how to import the generative AI text and file resource link from another course. Remember that you need to be an editor or manager on both courses.
Add a course specific generative AI policy
If you have a course specific generative AI policy you can add the recommended text and policy file directly to your course following the steps below.
Select and copy the “Using generative AI” text in the purple note section at the top of this guide. Do not include the <Link to department X…” text.
Add a text and media area to your Moodle course.
Paste the “Using generative AI” text into the general text area of your text and media area. Check that the text formatting looks okay and that the link to LSE's guidance on use of generative AI is retained.
Click save and return to course.
Add a File resource directly below your new text and media area.
Name your File resource appropriately e.g. “Link to department name – courseID generative AI policy”. Replace ‘courseID’ with your course code.
Drag-and-drop your policy document (MS Word or PDF format) into the file area and then click save and return to course.
How do I update a centrally held departmental AI policy?
