Getting help with Gradescope

Gradescope at LSE FAQs

1. Who can use Gradescope?

Anyone at LSE can use Gradescope. However, Eden Digital is initially focusing efforts to support the use of Gradescope within quantitative disciplines. This is because Gradescope will address the unique requirements identified for the assignment workflows within these disciplines.

2. Do we have to use Gradescope? Is it optional for Departments or mandatory?

The use of Gradescope is not mandatory. Once you try its marking and feedback capabilities for the various assessment types you may decide to use it. You may also decide that the marking and feedback capabilities available via Moodle and Turnitin are sufficient for your needs.

3. How can marks and feedback viewed by students?

Students can access a Gradescope assessment from within Moodle. Once on Gradescope they can view their feedback and any comments as well as the marks for each question.

4. What is the available training for academics?

Eden Digital is delivering Gradescope training. You can check available dates and book a place via the Training and Development system or you can email Eden.Digital@lse.ac.uk to book an one to one or departmental training.

5. Is Gradescope available for only quantitative assessments, or also essay style assessments/quizzes?

Gradescope allows you to grade essay type of assessments, homework etc. The different types of assessments include:

  • Exams & Quizzes

  • Homework & Problem Sets

  • Bubble Sheets

  • Programming Assignments

  • Online Assignments (Beta)

6. What’s the added value of marking essays using Gradescope (compared let’s say to using Turnitin, or the review/comments tools on Word)?

This depends on the type of assessments students submit and the feedback you want to provide. If you are from a quantitative discipline, where mathematical symbols, equations, formulae or diagrams and/or computer programming tasks is required, then Gradescope provides a suite of tools to support these uniquely identified discipline needs.

7. How does Gradescope interact with Moodle?

Gradescope is integrated within LSE Moodle. This means that you can log into LSE Moodle and you can create a Gradescope activity the exact same way you add any other Moodle activity. The student enrolled on your Moodle course have access to the Gradescope assessment (note: synchronisation is required). When you finish marking at Gradescope you can push the Grades to Moodle (note: only overall mark will be added onto Moodle).

8. Could marks and feedback be downloaded from Gradescope?

Yes. You can download grades in an Excel spreadsheet directly from Gradescope.

9. If we enable anonymised grading, are we then able to download all marks with some sort of student identifier, e.g., student name or email addresses, so that we can link the marks back to Moodle and SITS?

You will need to de-anonymise the assessment and download the Excel spreadsheet with the gardes. This contains the students' email (among other details) as the unique identifier. You can then prepare the file as necessary for importing the grades onto SITS.

10. Could marks and feedback (entered on Gradescope) be seen from within Moodle?

Only the overall grade of a Gradescope assessment can be pushed onto Moodle’s gradebook. Itemised grades within an assessment (ie feedback from individual components) and feedback to them can only be seen through Gradescope.
