Why use it?
Course formats help you structure your course content using different layouts.
What ever format you choose try and make your course as accessible and user friendly as possible with clear labels, meaningful titles and descriptive names for files and images.
Step 1: Select a course format
Go to the course page and Turn editing on.
From the Administration block, click Edit Settings. From the course settings page, scroll to Course Format and click to expand it.
Click the drop-down menu on Format to reveal the choice of formats.
Select the required format from the list (you can view examples of the available formats below).
Click Save and display to apply the new layout.
Changing the format of an existing course will not remove any content.
Course formats available at LSE
The formats that are available at LSE are listed below. Please note that for most purposes, the Grid and Collapsed Topics formats are to be preferred, because they allow for a compact display that helps students find what they need. The Weekly and Topics formats tend to lead to long pages that are harder to navigate.
Grid format
This format, hides all content and creates a grid of icons and/or images for each section.
Clicking on a section icon/image will display the section content.
To make this course format accessible for keyboard and screen reader users, go to the course settings and from the Course format options set the Course layout to Show one section per page.
Collapsed topics format
All course sections except the General section are collapsed. Sections can be toggled to hide or expand the section content.
Currently, the collapsed topics format is not accessible for keyboard users, as using only a keyboard won’t expand the section content. A workaraound for anyone needing to navigate using a screen reader or by keyboard is to Edit your Moodle profile and preferences to switch to the Boost Moodle theme.
Weekly
The course page is organised into weeks based on the course start date chosen form the course settings.
Topics
The course page is organised into topics. You can enter a custom section name for each topic.
