Viewing Transcripts and Closed Captions for Lecture Recordings
LSE is required by law to make its websites and associated media accessible, including Moodle course content. Specifically, course content must meet the Web Content and Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard. This means that recorded video, e.g. recordings of lectures and seminars, must include closed captions or subtitles.
Some services we use at LSE, such as Zoom and Echo360, provide their own automated transcriptions and captions.
Automated transcriptions may not be sufficiently accurate to meet accessibility requirements.
DMHS support for students
DMHS works with students to identify the adjustments LSE needs to make. Students may be provided with access to tools that can help produce higher quality transcripts and captions than those produced automatically by Echo360 or Zoom.
Students who need captions and/or transcript for recordings should consult with an LSE Disability and Mental Health Service (DMHS) disability advisor.
As a student, access to lecture recordings is via Moodle. If you cannot find a link to your lecture recordings in your Moodle course, you should contact your lecturer or departmental academic support staff, asking them about publishing the recordings to your Moodle course.
Information for Students
On campus recording
Scheduled recordings of timetabled lectures in LSE classrooms and lecture theatres are automatically published to the relevant Echo360 section and will have transcripts automatically applied.

Captions help students follow along during playback.
Transcripts help students review, search for keywords, copy quotes, or use assistive technology.

Accessing transcripts for your recording
When you are viewing a recording in Echo360, click the Transcript button, identified in the image below. By default, the transcript panel opens to the right of the player.
As the media plays, the transcript location corresponding to the media location is highlighted.
Notice that at the top of the Transcript panel, there is a search box. Entering text into the search box immediately launches a search of the Transcript for matching terms. All matches in the transcript are underlined, allowing you to use the ‘< Previous’ & 'Next >' buttons or scroll through the transcript to find them. The recording will then match the point in time your selected searched word appears at.
Turn on captions for your recording
When you are viewing a recording in Echo360, click the “CC” button on the bottom toolbar of the player:
To personalize your closed caption options, click the ‘Settings’ cog on the bottom toolbar of the player:
And now choose ‘Subtitles/CC Options >’:
This will bring up a dialogue box where you can change the location (position on player) of the captions, set the font size as well as the caption contrast:
