Introduction
Set within the context of an increase in the use of GenAI, the School is looking at a range of options for ensuring the integrity of assessment, and Cadmus is just one technological solution we are exploring to do that.
Used in many other Higher Education Institutions across the UK, Cadmus is a secure edit tracking platform that integrates seamlessly with LSE Moodle and flags typical writing patterns potentially linked to GenAI use.
We are using Cadmus across a limited number of courses initially to test the efficacy of their platform in highlighting the possible misuse of AI in the drafting of assessments.
This feature offers benefits to the School but also helps students by minimising academic integrity risks. There are other features included in the platform that can assist students with drafting and organising essay content and avoiding plagiarism.
You will find more information and answers to questions you may have below.
Cadmus at LSE
What is Cadmus?
Cadmus is an assessment platform with digital capabilities to minimise academic integrity risks and supports both students and teachers in ensuring successful outcomes.
Why are we using Cadmus?
The School is looking at a range of options for ensuring the integrity of assessment against a backdrop of increasing use of GenAI, and Cadmus is one technological solution we are exploring. We are using Cadmus across a limited number of courses initially to test the efficacy of their platform in flagging the possible misuse of AI in the drafting of assessments.
Is the use of Cadmus on this course compulsory?
Yes. If your course has been selected to participate in using Cadmus, then you will need to use the platform to draft and submit your assessment.
What are the implications for me as a student?
The only change is to the method by which you draft and submit your assessment. Everything else remains the same. Any student using the Cadmus platform will be subject to the same LSE assessment regulations and academic rules as any other student.
When is this happening?
The Cadmus platform is being used across a limited number of courses during this academic year. You will be advised by your department about the specific courses affected and the associated submission deadlines in advance, to ensure you are prepared.
What is the School’s policy on the use of AI in assessment?
The use of Cadmus does not impact the existing policy on academic misconduct, so please familiarise yourself with it and pay particular attention to this paragraph:
“You understand the use of AI tools to help with any part of your assessment is strictly prohibited unless some use is permitted as defined by the Department responsible for the assessment (see Departmental guidance).”
Submitting assessments through Cadmus
How is this different from a traditional assessment?
In order to realise the full benefits of the Cadmus platform, we would recommend that all drafting is done within Cadmus.
Cadmus uses an edit tracking tool to flag potential misconduct in the use of AI or plagiarism.
How do I access the Cadmus platform?
You will access Cadmus through your course page in Moodle. Do not access via bookmarked or copied links.
How do I access my assessment through Cadmus?
Go to your course page in Moodle
Click on the assessment link
Accept the privacy policy
Cadmus will open up a new assessment page
Can I still use my own laptop?
Yes, you will be able to use your own laptop and work from any location, as you normally would.
Is the platform compatible with mobile or tablet devices?
Yes, Cadmus can be accessed and used through mobile devices (including smartphones and tablets); however, we recommend a laptop or desktop to get the best user experience.
Can I work offline?
You can work offline, but you will need the internet to enter the platform and start your draft. You can then work offline if you need to and once back online, you will need to sync to ensure your work is saved.
While we strongly recommend working online, we understand that you may occasionally need to work in places without an internet connection. The only times you strictly need an internet connection are when you first open Cadmus and when you submit. If Cadmus is open in your browser, and the internet connection drops, you will see the ‘Working Offline' notification.
While offline, Cadmus will try reconnecting in the background and the save status next to the ‘Review to Submit button’ will show saving. All changes will be saved locally on your browser until reconnected to the internet. Once back online, all changes will be backed up to the cloud, and 'saving' will change to 'saved'. If offline for a long period, do not close the browser, refresh your window, or clear your internet cache/history until back online.
Avoid using incognito or private browsing to prevent any saving issues when back online. Please also avoid from having Cadmus open in multiple browser tabs or windows.
Does Grammarly extension work with Cadmus?
Yes, it does.
If you have the Grammarly extension installed in your browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.), you can use Grammarly suggestions instead of Cadmus spell check while you work.
Install the Grammarly browser extension in your preferred browser (Chrome is recommend). Then in Cadmus, click on the ‘Settings’ icon, click ‘Disable Cadmus spell check’.
You may also use Cadmus Spellcheck when working on your assignments.
It's helpful to be aware that any underlines or corrections Cadmus Spellcheck makes are only visible to you when writing, and won't appear underlined in the final submission.
Will I be able to use referencing tools (EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley) with Cadmus?
There’s no direct integration between Cadmus and third-party referencing tools. However, built-in referencing styles and bibliography prompts will support you to reduce formatting errors. You can also still copy formatted references into Cadmus.
Will I receive my grade and feedback through Cadmus?
You will receive your grade and feedback through your department's usual process, unless your course leader says otherwise.
Trouble-shooting
Why is there a white-space break in my text?
These unexpected line breaks are often caused by non-breaking spaces used within text. In Cadmus, non-breaking spaces appear the same as a regular space resulting in a white-space break.
Non-breaking spaces can appear when you paste content into Cadmus from an external source which employs non-breaking spaces in their formatting. These also sometimes occur when external keyboards are used, which automatically add a space after a full stop.
Student can try hitting Enter instead of Shift+Enter, or can try copying text into a plain-text editor like Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) to remove hidden formatting, then paste it back into Cadmus.
My work has not saved? I have lost my most recent progress.
Please ensure you are always accessing via Moodle. Do not access via bookmarked links as these may have been replaced on Moodle.
If you want to bookmark a page for quick access, you can bookmark the Moodle assignment page, not the Cadmus page.
If you think you may have been working on a redundant Cadmus link or still cannot find your work, please contact eden.digital@lse.ac.uk.
I submitted before the deadline. Why is it showing as ‘Late’ on Moodle? Will I be penalised?
Submissions on Cadmus get pushed through to Moodle after the deadline has passed. It takes approximately 15-18 seconds for submissions to be pushed to Moodle. This causes the submission time on Moodle to show as ‘Late’. The correct time will show on Cadmus.
You will not be penalised for this.
