LSE Lecture Recording - FAQ for students

LSE Lecture Recording - FAQ for students

LSE has revised the lecture recording policy for the academic year 2025/26. Please see below for answers to some frequently asked questions. We have also published policy related FAQ page for teaching staff.

Common lecture recording questions for students

Will all my lectures be recorded?

Most lectures will be automatically recorded where the facility is available. However, some lecturers may opt out of recording. You'll be informed about recording availability by the course start date. If you have my adjustments that include lecture recording, please see “What if I have disability adjustments requiring recordings?

How do I access lecture recordings?

Recordings are available through:

  • Moodle (LSE's virtual learning environment)

  • Echo360 mobile app (for offline viewing)

You can only access recordings for courses you're enrolled in.

How long will recordings be available?

Recordings are typically available for the whole academic year in which the lecture occurred. They're also available for:

  • Repeated teaching

  • Deferred assessments

  • Re-sit examinations

LSE keeps recordings for up to four years before automatic deletion.

Can I share recordings with other students?

No. Recordings are for your personal and private study only. You cannot:

  • Copy, disseminate, or download recordings

  • Post them online or share via file sharing

  • Edit, adapt, publish, or sell recordings

  • Use them for any purpose other than personal study

Breach of these rules is a disciplinary offense.

Can I download recordings for viewing offline?

Recordings can be viewed offline via the Echo360 mobile app. Downloading via a web browser is disabled by default, but some courses may allow this. If you've downloaded recordings, you must permanently delete them by the end of your studies at LSE.

Are recordings a replacement for attending lectures?

💡 No. Recordings are a supplementary learning resource, not a substitute for attending scheduled teaching. You're expected to attend lectures in person.

Recordings should only replace live teaching in exceptional circumstances with lecturer permission.

What if I don't want to be recorded?

By attending lectures, you consent to being recorded. If you don't want to be recorded, speak to your lecturer beforehand. They can suggest solutions like:

  • Sitting in a position where you won't be recorded

  • Asking questions via a proxy

  • Asking questions only after recording has ceased

Can I make my own recordings of lectures?

You need permission from the lecturer and any other participants before making your own recordings. This applies even if the lecture is already being recorded by LSE.

💡 Exception: Students with relevant disability adjustments (MAs) may have different arrangements.

Any personal recordings are subject to the same usage restrictions as use of recordings made by LSE.

What if I have disability adjustments requiring recordings?

If you have My Adjustments (MAs) that include access to lecture recordings:

  • You'll get access to recordings as soon as possible (within 48 hours)

  • Recordings will be available for the full academic year

  • Access extends to repeated teaching, deferred assessments, and re-sits

  • Lecturers must permit recording unless suitable alternatives are agreed with you and DMHS

If you experience any issues with access to lecture recordings please contact DMHS for advice.
