Stream Use Case - video hosting and sharing

Audience

Teaching staff who are interested in recording, sharing, and basic editing of videos within the Microsoft environment.

Note: the LSE uses and supports Echo365 for lecture recording.

Prerequisites

LSE account with full access to the MS Office365 suite.

What is Microsoft Stream?

Microsoft Stream is a video hosting platform integrated with Office 365. It allows staff and students to upload, share, and organise videos securely within the LSE environment, with options for captions, comments, and trimming.

Stream (on SharePoint) is now the default version, replacing the older Stream Classic.

Access Stream

Does it integrate with Moodle?

Yes — Stream videos hosted on SharePoint or OneDrive can be embedded in Moodle pages. Permissions must be checked for visibility.

Why use it?

  • Upload and share lecture recordings or short explainer videos

  • Caption videos automatically and edit transcripts for accessibility

  • Organise content into folders (via OneDrive or Teams)

  • Replace reliance on external platforms like YouTube

Real Example

University of Oxford migrated fully to Stream (on SharePoint), using it to embed lecture videos within VLEs, replacing traditional lecture capture.

How might students use it independently?

Students can record themselves presenting (e.g. for assessment or rehearsal) and share securely with peers or instructors. But they can also do this with Echo Personal Capture.

Digital/Web Literacy Opportunity

Stream encourages awareness of video permissions, digital accessibility (e.g. captions), and content hosting ethics within institutional systems.
