Embedding Third Party Media (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)

If you don’t own the video you want to embed, you will need to embed it through the means provided to you on the third-party site.

Important: don’t download third-party content to then upload it unto Echo360 or Moodle – this is in breach of copyright law, even if you’ve paid a license for software to download videos. See LSE’s copyright guidance for more information.

A note on accessibility: ideally the videos you link to should have subtitles or captions. If not, consider summarising the main ideas for students who cannot access the video.

Option 1: Using links – YouTube and Vimeo

If you are using a YouTube or Vimeo video, the quickest and easiest way to embed them into your content is by copying and pasting its link.

  1. On Moodle, add a new activity by clicking Add an activity or resource.

  2. In the “Activity chooser”, select Text and media area.

Under Resources, select the Text and media area activity.

  1. Switch to a new tab and navigate to your chosen video.

  2. Copy the URL link to the YouTube or Vimeo video.

  3. Back in your Moodle content, write your link text.

Make sure you use meaningful link text. For example: “Watch the 1995 Microsoft Windows 95 Video Guide.”

  1. Select the words you want to link and click on the Link button.

Highlight the link text, then select Link in the toolbar.

  1. Paste the link to the video in the Enter a URL box and click on Create link.

Add the URL to the Enter a URL field, then select the Create link button.

  1. When done, scroll down and click Save and return to course as normal. Your video will display on your Moodle page.

You can also add text before or after your video by adding new lines in the text box.

Option 2: Embedding the video

YouTube

Step 1. Get the embed code

  1. Click on the YouTube video’s share button. This will open the sharing options.

  1. Click on Embed.

In the embed options, you can:

Start at: at what point it starts playing,

Show player controls: always leave it selected.

  1. Click Copy.

Step 2. Add the embed code to Moodle

  1. Go back to Moodle and the activity you were preparing.

  2. On the editor’s navigation bar, click on Tools and select Source code. This will display the HTML code of your text.

  1. Locate the paragraph that will precede the video and press Enter to start a new line. You can recognise the end of the paragraph by the closing tag </p>.

If you aren’t including text before your video, you can paste the embed code at the beginning of the text box.

  1. Paste the copied embed code.

  1. Click Save at the bottom of the Source code box to return to the editing box.

After returning to the text box, you can add additional text after the video. Make sure to press Enter to start a new line for better readability.

  1. When done, scroll down and click Save and return to course as normal. Your video will display with any written text.

Vimeo

Step 1. Get the embed code

  1. Hover over the video and click on the share icon shaped like a paper plane. This will open the sharing options.

  1. Click on More options and make sure you select the following:

    1. Size: responsive.

    2. Special stuff: uncheck all options.

For accessibility best practice, don’t select ‘Autoplay this video’.

  1. Click on the embed code to select it and copy it (press Ctrl and ‘C’).

Step 2. Add the embed code to Moodle

  1. Go back to Moodle and the activity you were preparing.

  2. On the editor’s navigation bar, click on Tools and select Source code. This will display the HTML code of your text.

Other platforms

If you are embedding a video from another platform, copy the embed code and follow the instructions for YouTube videos starting at step 2.

You will usually find any embedding options by clicking on a ‘Share’ button.
