Using one assignment activity for separate teaching groups
The following guidance is not relevant to assignments with Accipio Grade enabled. For assignments with Accipio Grade enabled, see Marking Assignments with Accipio Grade or contact the Digital Education Team at eden.digital@lse.ac.uk.
Why use it?
Where teachers mark the work of their own class or group, some courses use separate assignment activities for each teacher or class. While this can seem like a practical way to manage marking and release grades independently, it is possible to use a single assignment activity to achieve the same aims. A single assignment activity should also be created for the following reasons:
Clearer student experience: Students see one submission point, reducing confusion.
All assignment activities on a course appear in a student’s My Moodle Assessments block (coming in 26/27). Creating multiple assignments for one assessment would suggest to students that they have more assignments to complete than is actually the case.
Reduced workload: creating a single assignment is less burdensome than setting up and maintaining multiple assignment activities.
Improved organisation: All submissions, feedback, and grades are kept in one place, making administration more efficient.
Step 1: Add an assignment activity
Go to the course page and Turn editing on.
Scroll to the section where you want your assignment to be displayed, click Add an activity or resource and pick assignment.
Step 2: Settings
Tip: Click on the question mark icon next to any setting to display extra help.
Under Grade and Common module settings, you must choose the following key settings to enable an assignment for separate teaching groups. Refer to the Assignment set-up guide (individual and group) guide to adjust other assignment activity settings as per your requirements.
Grade
Use marking workflow: this is enabled by default and should remain enabled. This allows teachers to release marks for their class/group independently of other teachers on the course.
Allow partial release of grades while marking anonymously: enable this if Anonymous submissions is enabled. This will allow teachers to release marks and feedback without revealing the identities of students. If Anonymous submissions is not enabled, this setting will not appear.
Common module settings
Group Mode: Choose Separate Groups. This allows teachers to filter submissions by their teaching group.
When a student chooses a seminar group or is assigned to one in LSE For You, the group will be created in Moodle and the student will be added to it automatically. Groups can also be manually created on a Moodle course; see the Groups and Groupings guide for details.
Step 3: Marking
When accessing the assignment activity, teachers will see a Separate Groups filter. Choose the relevant group from filter drop-down menu. This filter will remain in place until it is removed.
The Separate groups filter is also available on the submissions table.
Keep the filter in place throughout the marking process. The Provide grades and feedback on individual assignment submissions guide contains more detail on the marking process.

If anonymous submissions is enabled, do not reveal student identities when releasing marks to students. Provided Allow partial release of grades while marking anonymously has been enabled on the assignment, marks can be released while retaining the anonymity of students.
