Assignment Quick Start

Why use it?

This quick-start guide shows you how to create a formative, individual, file-submission assignment in Moodle with all feedback options enabled. It covers the recommended settings for a straightforward assignment and points you to further guidance for more complex scenarios.

1. Add the assignment

  • Turn Editing on in your course.

  • In the relevant section, select Add an activity or resource → Assignment.

Once editing is turned on, select ‘Add an activity or resource’ at the bottom of the page.

You can also select the three dots ‘More menu’ on an existing assignment for more options, like duplicating the existing assignment.

2. Describe the assignment

  • Under General, enter a short, clear Assignment name.

  • Use the Description to tell students what to do (task, word count, format, etc.).

  • Add any supporting files if needed.

3. Set key dates

  • In Availability, set a Due date (late submissions marked late).

  • Optional: set a Cut-off date to stop submissions entirely.

4. Configure submissions & feedback

  • Under Submission types, set the Submission types to file submissions only (set number and file types if required).

  • Under Feedback types, keep all Feedback types options enabled (comments, PDF annotation, files, audio).

  • Leave settings in the Submission settings section at their defaults.

5. Grading & assessment type

  • In the Grade section, keep Grade set to Points (out of 100) and the method to Simple direct grading.

  • Also in the Grade section, set Anonymous submissions = No (as it’s formative work).

  • In the Type of Activity or Resource mandatory section, choose Formative Assessment.

6. Save

  • Click Save and display.


That’s it.
Your formative individual file‑submission assignment is ready.
