Cadmus Assessment Edit Tracking Proof of Concept
Introduction
The Digital Education Futures Programme (DEF) is exploring the use of Cadmus, a leading edit-tracking assessment platform, in the 2025/26 academic year. In response to the School's position on Generative AI in Education, we have invited academics with teaching responsibilities to participate in this innovative initiative to test the efficacy of the platform across a limited number of courses.
Why are we doing this?
Since the rise of GenAI in late 2022, traditional take-home written assessments - especially academic essays - have faced unprecedented challenges. Essays remain a key component of assessment across LSE departments. This proof of concept will explore a technological defence of the essay, enabling us to maintain academic integrity while preserving the pedagogical value of written assessments.
What is Cadmus?
Cadmus is a secure, edit-tracking platform that:
Records every keystroke in essay construction
Flags atypical writing patterns potentially linked to GenAI use
Integrates seamlessly with Moodle
Where is Cadmus already being used?
Cadmus is already in use at institutions like Manchester, UCL, and KCL, Cadmus is gaining momentum across the UK higher education sector.
What is the time commitment?
Approx 5 hours per course (plus introductory briefings)
Cadmus works directly with academics to configure the platform for their courses.
What are the implications for students?
The only change for students is to the method by which they draft and submit their assessment, and some of the in-platform features. Everything else remains the same. Any student using the Cadmus platform will be subject to the same LSE assessment regulations and academic rules as any other student.
Tip: Adding assessment resources for students on the Cadmus assessment increases the likelihood of them creating their assessments in the platform.
