Applying extra time to online assessments using the Assignment activity

When setting up online assessments, you may need to provide for students with Central Exam Adjustments (CEAs). You can do this by setting up a user override for the individual students.

NOTE: You will only need to apply extra time if the Assignment has been set up for a Time limited assessments with a common start/finish time for all students.

Applying a user override

  1. Go to the relevant Moodle course.

  2. Identify the correct Assignment and click on it.

  3. Click on the cog on the right-hand side and select User overrides from the drop-down menu.

4. Click on Add user override.

5. Search for and select the student in the search box.

6. Amend the time of the Due Date accordingly.

7. Depending on what is required, click either Save or Save and enter another override.

8. If you do not have to add another override and click Save, you should then see a list of the user overrides you have applied.

Applying user overrides when access restrictions are in place

There may be access restrictions enabled on the Assignment activity. Depending on the type of access restriction, this may cause the user overrides to be 'inactive’ and the list to appear greyed out.

What to do when the most commonly used access restrictions are enabled

Date restriction enabled - If you only have a date restriction in place, you don’t need to worry about the user override list being greyed out. Until the time and date of the date restriction are met, the user is seen by Moodle as not having the correct access and their override is counted as ‘inactive’. However, once the time and date of the restriction are met, the user will automatically have access and their override will become ‘active’.

Group restriction enabled - if you have a group restriction in place and the user override list appears greyed out, you should check that users in the user override list are members of the group(s) to which the Assignment activity is restricted. If they are not members of the appropriate group, adding them to the group should activate the override. If they are members of the appropriate group and the override remains inactive, it is likely that another access restriction is in place that is impacting on their access to the Assignment activity.
