When you set up your assignment make sure that you set Use marking workflow to Yes in the edit settings of the assignment under the section Grade. Set up the rest of the settings as per the Assignment set-up guide.

Note: Marking workflow is enabled by default on all assignments but can be changed in the edit settingsAssignment SETTINGS.

Step 2: Set Marking Workflow state

Tip: Click on the question mark icon (blue star) next to any setting to display extra help or click onMoodle Docs for this page link at the bottom of each page in Moodle for accessing context-specific documentation.

When you are ready to mark student assignments, click the Assignment and View all submissions. You can change the marking workflow state individually on each submission, see the guide on providing grades and feedback on individual assignments.

Scroll to the bottom of the submission table and under Options/Assignments per page select All to get all assignments to display on one page.

Using the Select box to left of each submission, select the submissions for which you want to use marking workflow – to select all submissions, click the Select all box under Select.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and from the drop-down menu With selected… select Set marking workflow state and Go.

Set the appropriate marking workflow state from the available list. As you start marking, it is likely to be In marking. The other available states are:

  • Not marked – the marker has not yet started

  • In marking the marker has started but not yet finished

  • Marking completed – the marker has finished but might need to go back for checking/corrections

  • In review – the marking is now with the person in charge for quality checking. This is useful for first markers to flag work for moderation.

  • Ready for release – the person in charge is satisfied with the marking but is waiting before giving students access to the marking

  • Released – the student can access the grades/feedback

Step 3: Save changes

To change the state as you proceed, you can repeat the process above on an individual or bulk basis and select a different state e.g. Marking completed or In review. You do not need to use all of them.

When you are ready to release marks to students, repeat the process above and select Released. At this stage (and earlier stages) you can select Yes under Notify students to generate an email letting them know that their grade and feedback are available.
of the most recent update to the marking workflow state. Students will then be able to review their grades and feedback.

NOTE: If ‘anonymous submissions’ is in use with marking workflow, you will need to reveal student identities before the grades are released. To do this, select Reveal student identities in the Grading action drop-downmenu at the top of the submissions table. If you cannot find this option, you will need to ask someone with Teacher (Editor) or higher access to do it.
